Interactions Between Protective Factors

The fourth hypothesis considered in the current study was that protective factors would moderate the relationship between risk factors and violence. These analyses were restricted to maltreatment variables and parenting variables only, because of the critical importance of maltreatment, perhaps particularly for girls, for many adverse outcomes including substance abuse and violence (Hill et al., 2001; MacMillan et al., 2001; Siegel, 2000), and because of the opportunities for intervening to modify parenting practices.
